Have you ever wondered if there has been a scientific study conducted on the effects of smiling when you do not feel like smiling…what are the chances that soon the ‘fake smile’ turns into a genuine smile? Suddenly, in your mind, you begin to believe that you are just a little happy. It turns out, you are! Strange? I will tell you the real secret to this later. December vacation is finally here. I, for one, am so grateful. It has been a extra long haul this year for so many reasons. But I am tucked away, safe and sound, in my little retreat for a few days. The view here is gorgeous. Before I could get here ‘real life’ decided to intervene and give me, among other challenges, 2 concerts, 2 tours to 4 different places, with 125 students all with instruments in their hands. Oh, yes. It was a little busy. I did not neglect my kitchen…it was my much needed therapy for the week. Make 300 cookies? Done. Boom, boom, pow. Candy cane cookies, anyone?
I am fairly certain I can recite a sugar cookie recipe from memory. Not a bad thing because you never know when you will need a sugar cookie fix! There were pinwheels cookies too. Melty Snowmen
All the cookies got set up like this…with many thanks to my many trusty elf helpers! So..my week before Christmas was just as busy as yours I am sure. It happens. We get through one day at a time. The other secret to finding that sliver of happiness was also found by giving…my students playing some music for some appreciative folks, or the elementary teacher who claimed our holiday concert was just the ticket to her finding holiday spirit. Giving…giving to others is a beautiful thing. Sharing with others is another secret. It reminds me of the larger universe out there. The lens of life becomes wider. This is a different Christmas for me. I am taking a little time out to fill up my buckets. Even the reserve tanks of strength were tapped out! It will be a time of quiet for me, of cooking, of listening, of learning and absorbing the beauty which is surrounding me from every angle – sort of like a great big hug. Stay tuned…thanks for reading!
